Who exactly are the Nephilim? Part 2

Hello pilgrim. What can I do for you today?

I got some good comments on my first Blog, including a very eloquent and erudite piece from Rob Hughes. Thank you. I want to address the points Rob raises, which can be read in the ‘comments’ section.

But first, let me say that we do not have to get too bent out of shape about this topic. Our salvation is not dependent on it. But it is good to kick things around and winkle out what truths we can and iron sharpeneth iron.

Referring to the Nephilim, Genesis 6:4 says, “…these were the mighty men which were of old, men of renown.”

The NIV translates this as ;”…they were the heroes of old, men of renown.” The point being, because they are referred to as ‘men’ they must therefore be the giants.

But everywhere angels appear in Scripture, they are called very often, ‘men’. We had the two men in shinning clothes who spoke to the women who went to dress the body of Jesus. We had the two men who spent the night with Lot and who’s feet he washed (before they ate a hearty meal). We had ‘the man Gabriel’ whom Daniel spoke of etc.

The point is, angels are men, but of a spirit nature as opposed to us flesh and blood variety. “Let us make man in our image” is said several times in Genesis as well as a few places in the New Testament. So, we look like them, they look like us. The difference is that we are mortal whereas they are gods (this is whay Paul referred to Satan as the ‘god of this world’).

So when it talks of the ‘heroes of old’ and the ‘mighty men of renown’, then this can mean both the giants and the fallen angels themselves. For if you read the Greek and Roman and Egyptian mythologies, it speaks mainly of the exploits of the gods themselves as well as their giant offspring, and refers to these gods as the ‘heroes of old’.

These ‘gods’, for this is what they are called in ancient writings, dwelled on earth for perhaps 1,000 years or so prior to the Flood. Their dwelling was in places such as Mount Olympus and Delphi in Greece. Apollo had his oracle here and there are temples to him and the other gods all over Greece and Turkey and that neck of the woods.

So these gods manifested on earth in plain view of humans at that time who mated with them and bore giants to them. We know that these ‘gods’ were on earth for circa 1,000 years because Enoch informs us they descended on Mount Harmon ‘in the days of  Jared’.  Bullinger in his Chronology places the birth of Jared at 3544BC. The Flood occurred in 2348BC.  That’s almost 1200 years later.

Thus the fallen ones, evil spirit men or fallen angels, were present and living on earth for all that time until they were incarcerated at the time of the Flood of Noah.

Could people see them and were they visible all this time? I reckon they were. For it was not a bunch of ephemeral, ethereal invisible spirits that manifested on earth and had sex with women. It was superhuman, supernatural, powerful spirit beings that appeared on earth and procreated with humans and taught them all manner of evil. The same goes for those fallen angels that descended AFTER the flood and had filled up the Promised Land with giants by the time Moses sent in the 12 spies after their exodus from Egypt.

“There we saw the Nephilim; the sons of Anak which come of the Nephilim.”

So there is absolutely no reason why the spies could have seen the fallen ones themselves and the sons of Anak, the giants, which come of the fallen ones. Incidentally, Anak is the name of a star in the constellation of Serpens in the heavenly bodies. In my book, The Nephilim and the Pyramid of the Apocalypse, I note how many of the ‘gods’  are named after stars or planets such as Apollo, Jupiter, Mercury, Perseus, Orion, Mars etc. This is why often in Scripture the angels are called the ‘host of heaven’ and are termed ‘stars’. For instance,  “the stars of Heaven fell unto earth like figs falling from a fig tree…” Rev.6:13

So Anak may have been one such fallen angel thus his progeny are called the Anakim in the Old Testament.

Rob makes the point that Satan and the one third that rebelled with him were on earth since Genesis 3. But were they?  I submit that Satan and the rest of his mob still reside in Heaven and that, according to Revelation 12, their eviction from the heavenly realms is still future. I will discuss this in another essay.

He also contends that the translators of the King James Bible did a tremendous job and would have been aware of who and what the Nephilim were. I agree. They did an amazing job. But they were not infallible and they did add in over 7,000 words to the KJV that were not in the original text. Also, it was 1611. They did not have electricity or computers. They could not pick up the phone and call a Hebrew scholar in Tel Aviv to ask a question. Or check an on-line Greek Lexicon. They worked by candle light using primitive tools. Yet they did a magnificent job. The Geneva Bible, the Cranmer Bible and the Tyndale Bible were all translated into English many years before the KJV. But that’s another story.

When one examines ‘the fallen ones’ in light of the context of all the places in Scripture where it speaks of angelic beings falling to earth, it becomes clear that the fallen angels of Genesis 6 are just that; the fallen ones.

Some have gone off in ‘wild and crazy tangents’ which may be ‘mistakes at best or complete heresy’ at worst. This is why many authors and teachers are saying that the giant hybrids are coming back and are making a big noise about it. I shall tackle this in the next post.

  1. Hello Patrick and blessings to you out there on the Emerald Island.

Thank you for your response. I had to look up the meaning of the word erudite.

As to the identity of the Nephilim, whether they be the fallen angels themselves or the giant offspring, I guess that we will have to agree to disagree on this particular issue. I know that you and Steve Quayle hold to this position of the Nephilim being the fallen angels, and I highly respect you both for your research and work on this incredibly mind-blowing topic. And your right, our salvation in Jesus is not at stake here–it just makes for very fun and engaging “fireside” chats, if you will.
As to angels and men, I believe that the Holy Scriptures record a definite and distinct difference between the two. Yes, we (mankind) are created in the image of God. Are the “gods”, angels—elect and fallen created in the image of God as well? Perhaps they are, but we do know that there are at least a few classes on angelic beings such as the Cherubim and the Seraphim that, at least in their original spiritual state, definitely do not look like normal men; some have 4 wings, some 6 wings and full of eyes, 4 faces (man, bull, eagle and lion) and so on.

    Also, Paul tells us that flesh and blood cannot inherit the Kingdom of Heaven in 1 Corinthians 15:50;

“Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.”

Yet, we do know the following, that Jesus stated to His apostles when He appeared to them after His resurrection (Luke 24: 39):

“Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.”

The Lord was in His resurrected body, just like believers will be awarded with after they pass on to be with the Lord. Paul states this so eloquently in 1 Corinthians chapter 15.

And, we must also consider Luke 20: 35-36:

“But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage:
Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.”

    And Matthew 22: 30:

“For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.”

So, considering the above scriptures I believe that we can conclude that angels are, first and foremost, spiritual beings, created higher than mankind (Jesus became a man, a little lower than the angels – Psalms 8:5, Hebrews 2: 7 & 9) and usually invisible and undetectable to the human senses. However, they can and do put on flesh and bone (a physical body) at times and directly engage in the affairs on man in a physical sense – a classic examples of this would be the two angels appearing with God unto Abraham and then going down to Sodom and literally having to pull Lot, his wife and their two daughters out of the city before destroying it. And, there are many others as you are aware.

Nevertheless, even with the many examples of angels physically appearing unto man, whether in their original spiritual state or as “men”, this is the exception rather than the norm. And, just because they appear as men, does not mean that they are men in the human sense. Satan, who is a fallen Cherub, can appear as an “angel of light”, and I believe, as a man if he wishes to do so due to the fact that several former deep satanists (see Rebecca Brown’s book He came to set the Captives Free and Prepare for War, Bill Schnoebelen’s book Lucifer Dethroned, the personal testimony of John Todd – Angel of Light and Spellbound comic books, and the many Pod costs from pastor Russ Dizdar to name a few) and come out of the occult and testified that the devil can and does appear and engage with his followers at certain times and events. We should also consider the classic chapter 14 of Isaiah in which the prophet records about the fallen cherub (Isaiah 14: 16):

    They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, [and] consider thee, [saying, Is] this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;

I also personally believe that the anti-chirst will be the literal son of satan himself, and thus, a “super-Nephal” if you will who, in league with the False Prophet, will set this world on its ear with the many dark miracles and signs they will perform in order to deceive the masses at large that the anti-christ is indeed the One and True Messiah – a massive global-wide lie the world will swallow “hook, line and sinker”, as we say out here in America.

With all this said, I still do not buy that the Israelite spies actually saw fallen angels walking around in Canaan in Numbers 13. No, I believe that these were the physical offspring of fallen angels, whether they were the direct offspring of the fallen angels or devils or just in the Nephilim blood-line is uncertain, but physical giants nonetheless – part angelic and part human. Such evil tribes as the Anakim (“long-necked ones”) – the sons of Anak, who was the son of the giant Arba who resided in Hebron, until Joshua expelled them, were physical flesh and blood giants that had the polluted nephal blood (seed of the serpent) flowing in their veins. This is one of the main reasons that God commanded Moses and the children of Israel to completely annihilate these devil tribes, show them no pity or mercy whatsoever, but to kill very man, woman and child (and even the livestock in some instances). Sobering to say the least.

I really cannot see God commanding the armies of Israel to do physical battle with devils (fallen angels). This makes no sense, especially when we know that angels are much more powerful, stronger and intelligent than man, can materialize or de-materialize at will and are definitely restricted by God as to the actual degree in which they can engage in the affairs of man – see Job and how God restricted satan to the amount of damage and testing upon Job, even though it was severe.

Consider the account in Isaiah 37: 35-36 where the angel of the Lord was sent forth and smote 185,000 Assyrian soldiers in ONE NIGHT because king Sennacherib dared to blaspheme Yahweh.

For I will defend this city to save it for mine own sake, and for my servant David’s sake.
Then the angel of the LORD went forth, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they [were] all dead corpses.

I did the quick math on this account and came up with the following:

Assuming the soldiers went to sleep around 12 midnight in the camp and woke up around 7am (a 7 hour time frame which is reasonable for a military camp during wartime), we can conclude the following:

The angel of the Lord slew approx.
    -26,429 men an hour
    -440.4 men a minute
    -7.3 men per second

A spiritual being of such prowess, is far too powerful and fast for any human man to take on in combat. No. I believe that angels battle angels and men battle man and sometimes Nephilim – half men/ half angel. Nephilm are tough enough I would think seeing that most of Israel were so terrified of them that they wanted to turn back to Egypt.

The battle we have with devils (fallen angels) is a spiritual one – through prayer and fasting in the name and in the power of Jesus (Ephesians 6). Fallen angels try and usurp our God given identity and authority by seeking to deceive and delude us into worshiping them and covenanting with them instead of the One True God – Yahweh. Tricky devils they are, but I digress to your point on the Antediluvian world and whether or not fallen angels ruled in a visual manner or not.

I really do not know, but believe that could have been the case. The Pre-flood world was much different than the post-flood one in many aspects as I sure you know. Did fallen angels rule over mankind from mountain palaces (Mt. Olympus) and enormous temples and megaliths as many of the ancient mythological tales state? Could be, but not entirely conclusive. The problem lies in the fact that many of these myths have several versions recorded of them, some which blatantly contradict each other. The major world empire pagan pantheons of Babylon, Egypt, Assyria, Persia, Greece and Rome all have deities and demi-gods which exhibit similar personas and stories as their previous incarnations from the earlier empire, but with different names for the most part. Which names are correct and which stories and versions are true is anyone’s guess. Do these pantheons reflect historical truth? Sure, I believe so. But, as to the varying details, much bastardization and downright inaccuracies have crept in over the millennia.

You mention Mt. Olympus and Delphi where the god Apollo had an oracle. But, was this pre-flood or post-flood? Probably the latter and Zeus, Apollo, Hermes and the rest of these boys rarely appeared unto mere mortals. When they choose to do so, Zeus, for example, would transform himself into an eagle or some other beast before appearing and engaging, often to have sexual intercourse with some “lucky” Greek beauty.

An interesting side note is the various fragments of The Book of Giants that were found at Qumran among the Dead Sea Scrolls. These fragments record not only giants that came forth from the union between fallen angels and women, but also monsters as well. This gives some credence to the dark myths of Medusa, the Minotaur and other such like creatures of “fantasy.”

And lastly, the fall of satan and his angels. There are basically 3 interpretations on Revelation 12: 7-9:

#1 This event took place at the dawn of time and records the original first fall of satan and his angels from heaven.

#2 This event took place at Calvery, when Jesus was crucified, died, was buried and then resurrected from the dead. He won the day, took possession of the keys to hell and death and threw down satan and his armies.

#3 Future event, when satan and his host will be cast down to the earth from the Kosmos and atmosphere (1st and 2nd heaven).

This is a tough one and difficult to say for sure. I do lean toward the 3rd interpretation though and thus, agree with you. My point in my first comment was than satan had already fallen by Genesis 3 and thus, the events in Genesis 6 are a future and must be a second fall of the angelic host, unless one assumes that satan fell alone originally?

    Revelation 12: 4 states:
And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth:

So, satan drew a third part of the host of heaven with his tail and cast them to the earth. I would be very interested to get your full take on this event.

Thanks again for your time and attention.

    Look forward to your response.

    Fight the Good Fight…
    Keep the Faith…

    In Christ,

    • Hi Rob,
I think you should write a book yourself lol. I am going to do my next Blog on where Satan dwells. I was not suggesting that Joshua fought fallen angels. They defeated the offspring who were giants and who filled up the Promised Land at that time. But the fallen angels post flood could be seen just as the pre-flood gods were. Have a look at the Temples in Egypt and the images there. They are full of pictures of their ‘gods’. Also, we had them in Ireland at one stage and they built the many Neolithic monuments here. But were called Druids. You really ought to read Return of the Antichrist as I cover a lot of this in detail there. But you would really enjoy The Nephilim and the Pyramid of the Apocalypse as it has many pics and images. One of a particular ‘god’ who is, imo, a fallen angel. He is the god Min. Many of these images of gods resemble men. Others are half men, half animal. I have no doubt that they were messing with genetic back in the day and this is why the two spies had to carry on cluster of grapes on a staff between them. Big people need big food. Also the Centaurs and Minotaurs, Pan etc. But I have documented all this in my two books and cannot re-hash it all here.

Of course angels are spirit beings. But we do not know what spirit is. Every time they appeared, they are called ‘men’. Even the verses you quoted regarding Satan being cast to earth refers to him as “…is this the man who shook the nations”. Rebecca Brown describes the Devil appearing at a coven and says he was a beautiful looking man. The point is, what are angels when they are not putting on the appearance of men? Just invisible nothingness? I do not think so. Right now in Heaven we have Jesus sitting on the right hand of His father, surrounded by 24 elders with crowns sitting on thrones; and innumerable amount of angels. Are they all invisible spirits? Well Jesus is not and I doubt he is surrounded by invisible angels such as Michael and Gabriel.

But I appreciate your input and folks can enjoy the banter. It’s late here in Dublin. Time for bed.
      God bless,

  2. Morning Patrick,
I actually write screenplays and graphic novels. If you email me your mailing address, I’ll send out my latest GN to you titled The Outlaw Prince – a medieval yarn, much in the tradition of Robin Hood and King Arthur.

To sum up, I simply believe that angels are very powerful and highly intelligent spiritual beings, most likely made of fire and invisible to the human eyes in their natural state, BUT indued with the God-given ability to put on “flesh and bone” when they wish to manifest themselves into the physical material world and interact with us – just like Jesus said He had and showed to his apostles after his resurrection.

And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire.
Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?
    Hebrews 1: 7, 14

At any rate, I look forward to more of your posts and intriguing questions and ideas.

P.S. I have read your book, Nephilim and the Pyramid of the Apocalypse (although it has been a few years) and did buy the Return of the Anti-christ, but have only read a short part of it as yet.

    • Hi Rob,
I reckoned you were a bit of a scribbler like myself. I agree more or less with your idea on angels. But if you were transported to Heaven right now, I doubt these beings are invisible.
I have been trying to come up with a comparison between humans and angels. Perhaps it’s like two cars, except one has no battery . But when we get our new spiritual bodies, like unto His, then we get the power which transforms us into spiritual beings. But like Jesus, we can still eat, drink wine and go fishing.

Finish reading Return of the Antichrist and then think about a screenplay. You could go from pre-Flood to future. I have another idea for a secular comedy which has never been done in cinema. If you want to hear it, we should have a chat.

      Bless, Patrick
